Collective Visions Gallery is honored to welcome esteemed ceramic artist and educator Rick Mahaffey as a guest lecturer during the 2025 CVG Show. Join us on February 28, 2025, for an engaging and insightful presentation from a master of ceramics whose career has spanned over five decades, shaping both the artistic and academic communities in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Rick Mahaffey has been an active potter since 1969 and spent nearly 50 years teaching ceramics at the college level, including 31 years at Tacoma Community College before retiring in 2023. He was also one of the four founders of the International Society for Ceramic Art Education and Exchange, an organization based in Tokyo that fosters global collaboration in the ceramic arts. His extensive experience has taken him around the world, where he has lectured and presented workshops in China, Japan, Turkey, Korea, England, Kenya, and Mexico. His work is featured in museums and private collections across four continents.
With a deep appreciation for both tradition and innovation, Rick’s work is often influenced by Japanese ceramic techniques, including Yakishime (unglazed wood-fired pottery) and Shino glazes, as well as the philosophy of Wabi Sabi, which embraces imperfection and simplicity in art. His career reflects a lifelong dedication to exploring and refining his craft while sharing his knowledge with students, artists, and ceramic enthusiasts worldwide.
Attendees can expect an enlightening discussion that reflects his vast experience, unique insights, and passion for the ceramic arts. Whether you are an artist, collector, or simply curious about the creative process, this event is sure to inspire and engage.
