Duane de Lessart
painter and colored pencil
Growing up in the vast wilderness of West Virginia, I discovered my love for art at an early age. With a fresh brown paper bag as my canvas, I would retreat into the woods accompanied by my faithful companion, Lady. Hours would pass as I immersed myself in sketching the enchanting wildlife around me, capturing their lively movements with my trusty no. 2 pencil. Lady, my guardian angel, always kept me safe from any perceived dangers, including snakes.
Throughout my school years, I was fortunate enough to have an exceptional art teacher, Mr. T. Wiley, who recognized my passion and pushed me to further explore my artistic abilities. Although life took me on different paths, including painting billboards, barns, and even church baptistries, the financial aspect of these endeavors forced me to seek alternative means of sustenance. I made the decision to join the Navy, where I dedicated 12 years to submarine service.
Upon completing my Associates Degree at the Art Institute of Seattle, specializing in Graphics/Web Design, my creative interests shifted towards the realm of creating graphics for educational purposes. Fueled by my newfound fascination with the psychology of visuals in learning, I pursued a BA in Adult Learning and embarked on a fulfilling career as a curriculum developer.
After retiring from government service, I now find myself living in the captivating Northwest. It is here, in this new chapter of my life, that I have once again turned to fine arts. I am filled with anticipation as I prepare to showcase my artwork along the picturesque Puget Sound, and who knows, perhaps even further afield. I invite you to stay connected as I embark on these exciting new adventures and share my artistic creations with the world.
