Alan Newberg

sculptor

Alan is a full-time artist working in Kitsap County, Washington. He was born and raised in Custer, South Dakota, where his family has operated a small sawmill specializing in Black Hills ponderosa pine lumber production since 1923. He worked there summers, weekends and after school starting at age 15, and continued through the summer following his freshman year in college. He attributes his interest in working in wood to this family tradition.


As an artist, he has exhibited widely throughout the United States in museums, art centers, and galleries. His work has won awards and honors in numerous juried professional competitions, including several first place and best of shows. His sculpture was featured in a three month solo exhibit at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art in 2016-7. Major examples of his work can be found in a number of public, corporate and private art collections all over the country.  


Alan maintains a studio near Bremerton and is a founding member of the Collective Visions Gallery. He has over 40 years of experience teaching college-level art, including 20 years at Olympic College in Bremerton. Before moving to the Puget Sound area in 1989, Alan was a tenured professor of art (1969 -1989) and for seven years was chair of the Art Department at Montana State University-Billings.He holds a B.A. from the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, SD, an M.A. from the University of Wyoming, and an M.F.A. from the University of Oregon.

 

He is the chief organizer of the CVG Show, a state wide juried art competition now in its 15th year.
